Can you have your turkey and eat it, too, without coming out looking like one?

Columbia University MS, David Zulberg (media appearances include ABC’s “Viewpoints,” Pix 11’s “Dr. Steve,” CBS’s “Live from the Couch” and more) says you can, with a helping of THE 5 SKINNY HABITS: How Ancient Wisdom Can Help You Lose Weight & Change Your Life Forever (Rodale) – so, don’t let the pressure cook your nerves just yet.

Zulberg says you shouldn’t take a cold turkey / feast-or-famine approach to Threat Level Golden Brown. Rather than planning to hide your head in the sand to avoid temptation altogether or throw your hands in the air and say you don’t care if you can’t contain yourself, take the happy medium.

The Turbo Phase is an alternative to a detox short-term plan for challenging times if/when you find yourself going off your diet consistently and want to get back on track. This is an excellent way to reinstate your natural controls. With a bit of planning, you can apply the Turbo Phase around the time of a festive occasion and prevent those feelings of guilt or going off your regular diet.

TURBO PHASE FOR THANKSGIVING

On the day of Thanksgiving:

Daily Affirmation: I am staying on track and happy to be taking care of myself
Begin the day with two glasses of water (cold or hot).
Exercise: At least 10 to 20 minutes of walking
Breakfast: Fruit Meal (Light meal)
Two glasses of water midmorning or glass of water and then a cup of herbal tea
Snack: Low fat yogurt (Substitution method)
Lunch: Salad with tuna topping and low-fat dressing (PV meal—majority vegetable)
Two glasses of water mid-afternoon and/or coffee
Snack: Strips of vegetables (Substitution method)
Dinner: Thanksgiving Meal (V-Plus meal)

The day after Thanksgiving:

Daily Affirmation: “Health is not simply the absence of sickness.”
Begin the day with two glasses of water (cold or hot).
Exercise: At least 10 to 20 minutes of walking each day
Breakfast: Oatmeal or all-bran cereal with low-fat milk (Light meal <250 calories)
Two glasses of water midmorning or glass of water with herbal tea
Snack: Fruit (Substitution method)
Lunch: Salad with chicken topping and low-fat dressing (PV meal—majority vegetable)
Two glasses of water midday
Snack: Fruit (Substitution method)
Dinner: Grilled salmon and sautéed vegetables (PV meal)

This doesn’t mean that you should have six courses at your Thanksgiving meal. However, you can certainly enjoy the meal and not find it necessary to skimp at all! If you do overeat, you don’t have to be worried that you have set a new wave of bad eating habits in place. The 2 days of Turbo Phase will ensure that you stay on track and walk away from the festive occasion feeling vibrant and healthy.

Compare the Turbo Phase to most detox programs, which range between fasting, drinking only liquids, or eating only fruits and vegetables. Shakes or laxatives are often required or encouraged. Exercise is not encouraged on most detox programs simply because you probably wouldn’t have the energy for it.

So, relax and look forward to Thanksgiving. Enjoy the warmth of family and friends. Feel the intended gratitude for all the ‘good’ in our lives – including that we can use the Turbo Phase to enjoy and not indulge; enjoy and not regret!
